At Home Hair Dye Kit
A Final Prototype
An at-home hair dye kit inspired by lilypads and water lilies.
The pink bowl is made of flexible TPU to simulate a flexible silicone that will ensure that all dye can be scooped out with ease.
The white flower base keeps the bowl sturdy and sticks it to the lilypad using magnets. Each petal is removable for ease of cleaning.
The yellow centerpiece holds standard dye pots, and is held to the lillypad as well to reduce spillage and dropping.
The Lillypad is made out of galvanized steel surrounded by silicone sheets. The lillypad ensures that no dye will land on the sink, to prevent staining. It also keeps the bowls strudy and in place and also helps prevent spilling and dropping.
The brushes are industry standard hair dye brushes.
Process
Observational Research
I interviewed several people about how they dye their hair and the possible mess that it creates. I was able to categorize each user into 2 different types of users. From there I gathered information on what was most important to both groups.
Notes
Ug a bsinrush gives an even tone but leaves more room for missing pieces
Using only the hands is good if only using one color but to much dye can be used in one place
Both give a somewhat even amount of “fallout”
Drops of dye hitting the counter or floor
Hierarchy of Needs
Functional
Requirements /
QFD
I gave myself some functional requirements to follow when planning for the product.
The main ones are:
Needs to have multiple pieces (brush, bowl, etc)
-Needs to be easy to use without looking
Needs to be easy to clean
Bowl / Bowl equivalent needs to stay stationary in use
Needs to be easy to set up / disassemble
Sketches
I made several sketches keeping in mind my functional requirements. I chose the sketch that met my functional requirements and that had a design I liked the most.
After choosing the flower design I sketched more about how all the pieces will work together.
